Founded in 1834, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is a classic research-based university, with a vision that highlights education, research and innovation. Shevchenko University or officially the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv,colloquially known in Ukrainian as KNU is located in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. It is an institution of higher education that trains specialists in many fields of knowledge and carries out research. It is considered the most prestigious university in Ukraine and a major centre of advanced learning and progressive thinking.
RANKING - KNU is ranked within top 550 universities in the world.It is the third oldest university in Ukraine after the University of Lviv and University of Kharkiv. During the Soviet Union era, Taras Shevchenko University was one of the top-three universities in the USSR, along with Moscow State University and Leningrad State University. It is ranked as the best university in Ukraine in many rankings. Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv ranked in the top 421-430 brackets in QS World University Rankings (Great Britain) in 2014-2015.
FACULTY & STAFF - There are 13 Faculties and 8 Institutes within the university. At present, the student body of Taras Shevchenko University totals about 30,000 students which includes almost 2,000 students at the Institute of International Relations which is attached to Taras Shevchenko University.
INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION- The University has partnership with over 400 partner universities. The University maintains student exchange programs with universities of forty countries.
LIBRARY – Built in 1939-40,The Maksymovych Library holds around 3.5 million books, making it currently the largest research library in Ukraine. The Maksymovych library forms an important and impressive architectural ensemble which is today considered to be one of Kiev's key collective architectural monuments.
HOSTEL – Taras Shevchenko National Medical University possesses an excellent system of hostel accommodation. It owns three hostel buildings with capacity of over 2000 students. The rooms are fully furnished and consist of an apartment like system with a two bed and a three bed room with an attached toilet. On each floor there is a common hall and a common kitchen for cooking. The facility provided in hostels include comfortable halls of residence, computer clubs, sports facilities, cafeterias and dance halls. To promote a healthy lifestyle, the University has both health and sports in the Kyiv area, on the banks of the river Dnipro.
INFRASTRUCTURE- Taras Shevchenko National Medical University is one of the largest university of Ukraine and is subdivided in different campuses.The KNU university buildings are mostly located in the centre of Kyiv. The Red University Building is the principal university building, and is also a recognised national symbol of Ukraine’s higher education system. The building houses a large enclosed courtyard, and behind the building is the university’s A.V. Fomin Botanical Garden, home to one of the world’s tallest greenhouses.Other notable buildings include the Yellow Building, which houses the KNU Humanities department, and the Maksymovych Library which is the largest research library in the country. Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv also has an astronomical observatory, which was founded in 1845.
CURRICULUM- The curriculum of Taras Shevchenko University faculties are based on the combination of academic instruction with student's research work and the combination of thorough theoretical knowledge with specific skills.
